Frances Echols Medlock

Frances (nee Echols) (Cotton) Medlock was born in 1827 in Georgia. She was the daughter of George Echols (b. 1802 - d. bef. 1880) & Sarah Echols (b, 1805 - d. bef. 1900). She was united with Columbus ("Lum") Cotton, Sr. and they, along with their children, were enslaved along with the other members of Echols family in Leon County, Texas by Memory Stroud. Columbus “Lum” Cotton was the son of The Honorable Giles (or Silas) Cotton who served in the Texas Legislature from 1870 to 1873.

Columbus and Frances split after the announcement of Emancipation on June 19, 1865. By 1870, Frances and her two children, Jesse and Frances ("Sis"), were living in Limestone County with mother Frances' parents, George & Sarah Echols.

In about 1872/1873, Frances married The Honorable David Medlock, Jr., a Reconstruction Era legislator who represented Limestone County in the 12th Texas Legislature which met from 1870 to 1873.
